My dog loves ferrets. Every time we go to the pet store, my husband takes Whitley to the ferret cage and holds him up so he can watch the ferrets. He won’t bark or whine at them like he does the snakes, mice and other creatures. Whitley, that is; not my husband. I don’t blame him for barking at the snakes. Really. I’d bark too, if people wouldn’t think I was crazy.
But, back to the ferrets – Whitley just watches, fascinated, while the ferrets play and climb. I have no idea why he is so entranced with them. I’m not sure if he thinks they are cats, or if they’re a toy or what. But they are by far his favorite animal, at least of the animals that they carry at the pet store.
I don’t know how Whitley would act if he ever came across a ferret that wasn’t in a cage or an enclosure. I think he would probably bark at it first, and then try to bite it, unless it was standing still. When our cats run past him or try to play, Whitley usually nips at them, so that’s probably what he would do with a ferret.
My husband thinks we should get a ferret for Whitley. I’m sorry, but I’m not getting a pet for my pet. That’s just too weird. I’ll just keep letting him watch the ferrets at the pet store. At least it keeps them both (the husband and the dog) entertained while I shop.
