Rabbits have a bad rap when it comes to being a suitable solution for dinner. They’re just too darned cute and many people can’t get past those soulful eyes, big ears and soft fur. Perhaps that’s why, even in our society that is obsessed with fat free eating, the meat with the lowest fat content has been spurned in mainstream eating. While there is something to those adorable faces, the fact is rabbit meat is one of the most delicious, nutritious and healthiest meats you can eat.
High Protein, Low Fat
A serving of three ounces packs a whopping 28.1 grams of protein and only a mere three grams of fat. Compare that to chicken, which is considered a very health meat, at 17.3 grams of protein and 1.9 grams of fat. While chicken is lower in fat, the difference in protein is pretty significant.
Delicious
If you have never tasted rabbit meat, you are missing out on one of the tastiest meats you can find. It doesn’t taste like chicken, beef, or any other meat. It just tastes like rabbit, and it’s something I could easily have every week. Rabbit meat is excellent pan seared, roasted or slow cooked in a crock pot. Though it tends toward tough with older rabbits, those eaten at fryer age of 8-12 weeks are tender and mouth-watering.
While I adore rabbits and love hanging out with my breeding does, they can be a perfectly useful pet too, and provide meat for your family and even for your cats and dogs. They cost less to raise per pound of meat than a cow, and provide greater protein as well.
